Top Tips to Improve your Singing Tone

Improving Your Singing with Beautiful Tone

Now building on the basics of our previous tone singing tips, we will tell you exactly how you can take your singing voice to the next level using these great tone singing tips! Now you know what tone is and how much it can affect your voice, it is time to work on creating a beautiful tone for singing. Your tone in singing can improve no end with the right techniques to read on to find out what they are.

Aspire to Bel Canto!

Previously, we defined tone, offered a few tips to help you to get to grips with it and discussed how you can avoid errors. All of this is basic information will get you started but tone is more complex than you might initially think, especially if you are to really create a beautiful tone.

This is where Bel Canto comes in. It is an operatic term and perceived to be a rather ambiguous one at that but it dictates that you should have a lighter tone for higher registers, a focused timbre, a seamless range and complete breath control. It will take quite some time to achieve these points as well as an awful lot of practice.

Blend the registers effectively

One of the most important things to note in regards to achieving beautiful tone relates to the registers. Now a register is a series of tones that have the same quality and originate from the larynx. Improving your tone for singing without any knowledge or awareness of the registers is hard because you are constantly left wondering what you should be doing. However, if you blend the registers and adopt a certain tone for higher notes, you will find that you achieve beautiful tone relatively easily.

So what can you do to blend the registers and achieve a better tone? Well, each of the exercises below will help:

• Run scales. If you have a piano or other tuned instrument, you should use each note as a guide and start to run scales, moving from note to note seamlessly. Of course, you will probably focus on the pitch to start with but when you relax and focus on the sound and its quality, you will begin to notice that your tone improves as you practice.

• Focus on three individual notes anywhere on an individual scale and practice blending them together, moving from one to the next seamlessly. Close your eyes and feel them coming from your vocal chords. As they emerge, you will feel their quality and note errors so you will be able to improve your singing tone by putting them right.

• Repair all register breaks. Usually singing vowels will cause such a break. If this happens with you then you should slow down the exercise until you get it right before slowly but surely speeding it up again. This will improve your tone. Essential tips for achieving beautiful tone

There are other things you can do to achieve beautiful tone that have nothing to do with register.

• The first point is to look after your voice properly – drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, avoid dairy because it produces mucous that will block the throat, quit smoking if you have adopted that habit and exercise your vocal chords avoiding strain.

• You should also record yourself and track your progress. Your ear will not identify improvements in real time nearly as well as it will upon reflection. This will also give you confidence that you can achieve beautiful tone.

So there you have it – beautiful tone is not a myth but is actually a very achievable target. Improving your singing tone may take a while but it is worth every single ounce of effort you put in because you will notice the difference as soon as you begin to try out the tips outlined here. However, tone is not the only element of your voice you will need to work on to improve your singing.

How to Improve Your Singing Tone

Improve your singing tone

Today's article will be all about the tone of your singing voice and how to make the absolute most of it. But you do not just have good tone. You have to work on it and develop the skill so it is important to read the following vocal lesson and learn how to develop your tone.

Defining tone and why it is important

Tone is defined as the quality of a note when it is sung. It may also be described as the timbre of a note and is often referred to with descriptives like full, piercing, shrill, thick and so on. It is NOT the same as pitch but many people often confuse it with pitch. Pitch is the value of a note but hitting it perfectly does not necessarily mean that you will sound good when singing. If your note does not have a good tone, whether it is nailed on in terms of pitch or not, it will sound awful. This is why it is absolutely vital to work on it and make sure that you get the mechanics of tone completely right first time.

Toning up your voice tips

So now you know what tone is, you have to figure out how to work on toning up your voice. Your tone in singing can always be improved on but there are a few tips that can help you to get started now:
  •  Relax your voice. The more tension you have in your voice, the worse your tone will be so it is a must to make sure that no strain inhibits your natural vocal range.
  • Try singing a few scales and always warm up properly to make sure your voice is ready for any challenge. Failing to warm up properly can prevent you from achieving quality notes.
  • Experiment with various notes and songs, recording yourself and taking notes to make sure that you identify any notes and places that may well prevent you from achieving the correct sound.
  • Practice, practice, practice! There is no substitute for actually the singing. The more you use your voice and use exercises to improve it, the greater the quality of the sound.
  • Breathe properly. If you use the breathing exercises that you have already learned then you will find that your tone improves. Just relax and breathe.
All of the above tips can really help you to get a handle on your tone. You can improve singing tone at any point but bear in mind that it is a must to work on it straight from the start. It is a fundamental basic that must be in place for the more advanced techniques to work when you are looking to take your singing voice to the next level. If your voice does not have the right tone then no amount of breathing exercises and good posture techniques will help you. Posture and breathing is of course important but improving your singing tone will give your voice another quality.

Exploring Singing Basics 4: Essential Breathing Exercises for Singing

Breathing Exercises for Singing

Hello and welcome to the fourth installment of learning singing online. We hope you are enjoying our articles so far and will be pleased to know that you have probably already improved your singing by reading all about the basics. We are still on the fundamental knowledge needed for singing and this week’s information is absolutely vital if you want to make the most of your voice. It is all about breathing exercises for singing.
If you have read anything about how to improve your singing then you may already know that many tutors and experts mention breathing a lot. This is because it can really help to take your voice to the next level. Read on to find out how!

The difference a good breathing technique makes

Believe it or not, there is a very real difference between adopting a good breathing technique and a bad breathing technique. And breathing as you do normally is a big no-no. Taking shallow breaths may be enough for you to survive but it is not enough for you to sing. It is a bad technique for using your voice. Instead, you have to take control of your breathing techniques for singing, drawing a range of quick and slow breaths before exhaling slowly as you sing. If you fail to do this then your voice losing tone, strength and can actually be interrupted as you begin to run out of air.
There is another point as well. Good breathing techniques for singing can not only make your voice sound better and really help you to improve your overall tone and range, but it can also help you to keep fear and nervousness out of your voice when you finally step on stage. This may be a way off for you yet (after all, we are still learning the basics!) but it IS something you must consider. If you understand and exercise good breathing techniques then you can breathe through the nerves. You can keep your voice steady and will be able to use its strength and tone to project comfort and confidence, even if you do not feel it on the inside.

All about posture and breathing

As you can see, breathing exercises for singing are incredibly important in enabling you to sing as well as enhancing your voice overall. However, it is not as simple as just changing your breathing. Your body is not used to exercising breathing techniques for singing because they are not natural. In fact, the techniques may actually seem a bit forced to start with so it is important to practice them. In addition, you have to use your body. We have already spoken about how vital posture is so make sure that you stand with feet at shoulder width, a straight spine and an open stance so that the breath can really get into your lungs.
Here is how you inhale correctly:
  •  Inhale quickly, sucking the air into your lungs and visualising it being really heavy as it enters your body.
  • Focus on it as it falls through your body, hitting your belly button.
  • Feel your lower back and stomach expand and you may even want to use your arms to welcome the air into your body.
Of course, you will not have time to do this when you are singing but this exercise will give you an idea of how the technique can work. When you exhale then, you will need to control it, using your breath in a sustained and smooth way to ensure that you have enough puff to get to the end of the note or passage. Try to visualise blowing a feather gently on a constant course and you will get the right idea!

The best breathing tips

Although future newsletters will cover more in depth breathing exercises for singing, there are some basic tips that can help you to get to grips with breathing now. You have to learn to walk before you can run so make sure that you keep it simple with the following:
  •  Take a deep breath in and close your eyes. As you inhale, feel your entire body expand from your torso to your lower back. Feel the breath touch every element of your upper body and then release it slowly, singing a note of your choice as you do. You will be able to feel the control and maintain it after a few tries.
  • Stand still and take a quick but deep breath in. Place your finger in front of your mouth and exhale. Listen to the amount of noise made. The more noise the less control and more tension there is in your vocal chords. Try again until you can get it almost silent.
  • Pay attention to your breathing for an hour and see what you can do. The more aware of your breathing you are the easier it will become to control it.
There we have it then – now you have good knowledge of the basics of breathing exercises for singing. You now have to put it in practice. When you do, you will find that your singing becomes much better.
Thanks for joining us again and stay tuned for our next newsletter, the final element in our basics series before we move onto the stuff that will really get your voice jumping up the improvement ladder.
Until next time!

P.S. If you liked these singing tips why not share this with your friends or family who may also find it useful if they are trying to improve their singing techniques. Use the buttons at the top and bottom of the post to share.
